State of BIPOC Cancer™ Initiative
Elevating the Voices and Experiences of Communities of Color Navigating Cancer
The State of BIPOC Cancer™ Initiative is a community-driven effort led by United Colors of Cancer to better understand the experiences, challenges, and needs of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color navigating cancer.
While cancer remains one of the leading causes of death in the United States, communities of color continue to face significant disparities in prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship.
Despite these disparities, the lived experiences of BIPOC cancer patients and survivors are often underrepresented in research, healthcare planning, and policy discussions. The State of BIPOC Cancer™ Initiative seeks to help change that.
Why This Initiative Matters
Cancer outcomes are shaped not only by biology, but also by social, economic, and structural factors. Communities of color often experience:
Understanding these experiences is essential to building more equitable cancer care systems. The State of BIPOC Cancer™ Initiative aims to elevate community voices and help inform future research, policy, and patient support efforts.
A Community-Driven Approach
The initiative centers the perspectives of individuals and families directly affected by cancer. Through community engagement and data collection efforts, the project seeks to better understand:
- •The challenges patients face during diagnosis and treatment
- •Barriers to accessing care and survivorship resources
- •Financial and social impacts of cancer
- •Experiences navigating healthcare systems
- •Opportunities for improving patient support and advocacy
By gathering insights directly from community members, the initiative helps ensure that the voices of BIPOC cancer survivors are included in conversations shaping the future of cancer care.
The State of BIPOC Cancer™ Report
Insights gathered through the initiative will contribute to the development of the State of BIPOC Cancer™ Report, a resource designed to highlight key themes, challenges, and opportunities identified by community participants.
The report aims to help inform:
Researchers studying cancer disparities
Healthcare providers seeking to improve patient care
Policymakers addressing health equity
Advocacy organizations supporting survivors
By elevating community voices and lived experiences, the report seeks to contribute to broader efforts advancing cancer equity.
